Clever and Inexpensive Craft Storage Ideas

By Liza Schmitt As a crafter, you surely have plenty of bits and bobs all over the place. Of course there are very nice craft storage units available that can be bought, but most of them are quite expensive, especially if you have a lot to store. Here are a few clever and inexpensive ideas: Shoe Bags The type that is about the size of a large mens shirt, and hangs in your wardrobe on a hanger. If you can find a clear plastic one that would be ideal if not, be sure to label each pocket with the contents it holds. You could even make your own if you sew, or you could get the right sized polybags and stick them onto a piece of wood. Coffee Cans and/or Biscuit Tins Dont discard them once youve finished what was inside! Wash them out and label them with the contents theyre going to hold. You can even get quite creative instead of storing them in a cupboard or shelf unit (which would probably be more difficult to get to) keep them on top of a spare desk or dresser, but dress them up first! You can wrap them with pretty leftover pieces of fabric, even rope, or spray paint them to the color/s you prefer. Plant Pots As for the above idea with tins/cans, you could decorate small plant pots that you no longer use, or you you could buy the cheap plastic ones at a nursery. Glass Bottles Think of the few that are in your fridge or grocery cupboard at the moment (pickles, mayonnaise, etc). You could have quite an array of different sizes to fit many different craft goodies, big and small. When you shop for groceries, consider spending a little more on a bottled item, knowing that youll maximize its usage. Drawer Filing Units The type of little unit that would sit on a desk and usually has four to six drawers big enough to hold a little over A4 size paper, but not too deep. Look around at stationery stores you will see the expensive plastic ones, but often youll also find cheaper ones made of board (which can also be decorated if you like). Gift Boxes If you ever receive a gift in one of those pretty gift boxes, keep the box for your bits and bobs, theyre usually the ideal size for something. Good Luck, and have fun doing it! It’s Fun To Make Useful Homemade Gizmos

By Alan Detwiler It’s fun and satisfying to design and then make simple items that serve some purpose. I find it very rewarding to conjure up designs out of my imagination and then build them using common tools and cheap or free materials. I’ve made all kinds of things. Most of them performed some function that no readily available, store-bought device offered. I do a lot of text keying at a computer keyboard. After many hours of keying, day after day, my hands and fingers tell me (as in pain) that they’re pushing too hard, too many times. After going from store to store looking for a keyboard with easy to press keys, I realized that I needed something to measure the force needed to press the keys on a particular keyboard. Trying to judge the force by typing a little with each keyboard wasn’t separating the Tylenol endorsed keyboards from the more finger friendly keyboards. So I rigged up a plastic tube taped to a vertical wire a few inches long. Pennies could be put in the tube. The lower end of the wire is rested on a key. The number of pennies needed to push a key down is a measure of the key’s required press force. Then there was the see through, wall hung beehive that I put on my bedroom wall. My father used to keep bees to harvest honey. One cold day in March, I discovered an abandoned hive that had fallen over exposing the bees to the elements. There was only several hundred bees left out of what was once thousands. I put a sheet of glass, about 2-foot by 2-foot, onto a wooden frame that I attached to my bedroom wall. Then I carefully transported the faltering bee colony to their new home. A tunnel made of metal window screening provided a path for the bees to come and go under a slightly raised window. The colony’s queen had not survived being exposed to the weather, so I knew no new bees would be reared. This colony would only last as long as the lifespans of its current members. But it was interesting to watch the bees doing what bees do throughout the next several months. And the bragging rights for having a bee colony on ones bedroom wall was something to envy. Both the keyboard force-o-meter and the wall-mounted beehive were inspired by circumstances. I just saw the possibility of what could be done and wanted to do it. I try to be open to possibilites for other gadgets and gizmos that would be of value. It is well worth the effort: It is fun to make improvised gizmos, and you get a valued item. The item may suit your needs better than a purchased item because you make it the way you want it. The item could inspire wonder and delight. And it feels good to prove that your ingenuity and imagination can produce things of value. Below is a description of a couple of items you may like to make. Bootjack: If you often find it annoying to remove boots as you enter the house, this project is for you. The bootjack makes the task easier especially if the boots are tight fitting or you are carrying something so that your hands are not free. Begin with a 3/4 inch thick board that is about 2 feet long and 6 inches wide. Cut a V shaped notch in one end. Use nails to attach a small piece of wood to keep the notched end raised above the floor. Keep the bootjack near the door where you most often enter wearing boots. Put one foot on the jack to hold it in place. Put the heel of the other foot in the notch and pull your foot out of the boot. Wall display cubby box: Small cardboard boxes can be fastened together and hung on the wall. Small and valued objects can be placed there to be displayed and admired. Save boxes from muffin mix, artificial sweetener, rice or other often used food items. When you have enough, cut each box to an appropriate size. I started with boxes 4-inches wide, 2-inches deep, and 6-inches tall. I cut each box to half height, so that each box was 3-inches tall. Boxes that are twice as wide as they are deep can be arranged as shown in the diagrams of this article. If you use boxes with other ratios of width to height, use a different arrangement or use pieces of corrigated cardboard to fill any gaps between boxes. Lay a piece of plastic sheeting such as a plastic grocery bag on a flat surface. The plastic will keep excess glue from sticking to your work surface. You can use white glue to fasten the boxes together. To help keep the glue from running down the side of the boxes, use a method similar to that used by bricklayers applying mortar to bricks. Before putting a box into position, put glue on each side of that box that will be against a box already in place. That way, while applying glue, you can turn the box in any way that makes it easy to apply the glue. And the glue will quickly be between two surfaces. That helps keep the glue in place. A good glue pattern is shown by the red lines below. As you assemble the boxes together, use a straight edge such as a wall or a large box as a guide to align the boxes in straight rows. Set something heavy against the boxes to hold them together while the glue dries. Bricks or large books work well. Use the plastic sheeting to keep oozing glue from sticking the boxes to the books or bricks. You can use paper clips to hold the edges of the boxes together where gaps occur. When all the boxes are in place, let the glue dry for about 12 hours. Then use a nail to punch holes for a string that will go around the group of boxes. Two holes near each corner will keep the string in place. Tie the two ends of the string together. Hang the box display from a small nail. Alan Detwiler started the web site Leisureideas. Find and Catch More Fish, Quickly and Easily, with the FISHIN’ BUDDY 2255

By John Ballantyne “Wherever you like to fishlakes, reservoirs, rivers or streams, you’ll never have a fishing buddy who can spot fish as easy and as fast as a Bottom Line Fishing Buddy.” If you are fishing primarily in lakes I recommend the Bottom Line Fishing Buddy 2255 highly – it’s a reasonably priced, good quality fish finder. It’s very compact – ideal if you don’t have a lot of space in a canoe or float tube, or in my case, a 15-foot fiberglass boat. It weighs just five pounds so its portable if you need to carry it, and its separate bracket clamp means it can be attached to the side of your boat, or to the dock if you are not using a boat. It doesn’t matter to the Bottom Line Fishing Buddy – it just keeps finding fish. I’ve had mine for a over a year now and I’ve used it on my boat, canoes and float tubes. The Fishing Buddy hangs down at the side of your boat and gives you a reading of the fish below you, along with information about the contour of the bottom, and the depth too. Its got a “Sidefinder” feature as well, which shows up fish up to 60 feet from the boat. One of my favorite features is the alarm that goes off when it finds a fish – perfect if you want to close your eyes for a short sleep. Of course, the alarm can be turned off – it can get annoying if its constantly beeping as it finds fish below you. This isn’t a fish finder for deep-sea fishing – you’ll need something more powerful for that – but for lake fishing I don’t think you could do better. The Bottom Line Fishing Buddy – highly recommended.” John Ballantyne John Ballantyne is a keen lake fisherman who has tried a number of fish finders in the search for the ideal fishing accessories. The Ebb and Flow of Network Marketing

By Bruce Bailey And so I say to you: Ask, and you will receive; SEEK, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks will receive, and he who SEEKS will find, and the door will be opened to anyone who knocks. – Luke 11: 9-10. [Good News Bible] No matter how long youve been in this business, you will have experienced what I call the Ebb and Flow of Network Marketing. Its simply the highs and lows you experience from dealing with people. We have all experienced it, even the top earners in the business. See if this has happened to you. Youve just made a great presentation to a prospect and, in spite of your being able to neutralize every objection they have put forward, they still dont sign up. You feel rejected, frustrated, and disappointed. You begin to wonder why you ever got into this business and what youre doing wrong. You go into a bit of a funk, and start to feel sorry for yourself. After a bit of a lull, you decide to try another presentation to another prospect. This time, theyre ready to sign up almost before you open your mouth. Youre on Cloud 9, you can move mountains, you are master of your domain! What has happened? Youve just experienced the Ebb and Flow of Network Marketing. Every MLM distributor goes through it. This emotional ebb and flow is often what stops many network marketers from achieving the financial freedom and security they desire. They let their emotions control how much work they put into the business, and a few nos cause their efforts to diminish. Consequently, their business grinds to a halt. Successful networkers, however, adopt a posture of emotional equilibrium, not getting too high with each success or too low with each failure. In his CD series, Key to the Vault (which I highly recommend to any network marketer), Bob Schmidt tells the story of John Wooden, the legendary coach of the UCLA basketball program, who won 10 national championships in a 12-year span. Wooden wanted his players to achieve a level of emotional maturity, or equilibrium, regarding their performance on the court. He wanted his players to behave in such a way that, after a game, a locker room observer would not be able to tell whether the team had won or lost. Wooden stressed to his players that if they had simply gone out and done their best, the outcome was not the issue. Therefore, being high on victory or low on defeat never entered into the equation. Thats what he meant by emotional equilibrium. Remember the acronym S.E.E.K. Seek Emotional Equilibrium Knowingly Learn to control your emotions; dont let them control you. If a prospects failure to sign up with you causes you to go into an emotional tailspin, you have lost control of the situation. Because your business depends on you, you are letting your prospect control your business. This is equally true for a prospect that does sign up. If you get too high on that success, and base you next actions on what the prospect has done, you have again let them take control of your business. Dont let your mood, your emotional state, control your efforts. S.E.E.K., and you will find the path to achieving the success you desire. Taking Charge of the Job Interview

By Louise Fletcher You are not alone if you dislike job interviews. Many senior-level executives, accustomed to being in control, are uncomfortable with the uncertainty of the interview situation. The good news is that you can take charge of every interview, by using a common interview technique to your advantage. Im referring to the technique of behavioral interviewing, which simply means that interviewers ask very specific questions about real situations. The theory is that your past behavior is the best predictor of how you will behave in the future, so employers probe your background for clues. Lets imagine that XYZ company is looking for a Marketing VP who can generate a lot of buzz with a small budget. In order to understand your experience in this area, an behavioral interviewer will ask: Tell me about a time when you had to promote a product with very little cash. or : Describe a time when you created a lot of excitement about a new launch using non-traditional marketing techniques. Behavioral interviewing has become quite common over the last 15 years and, you may well have experienced it yourself, either as an interviewer, or an interviewee. Provided you are prepared (and well talk about this in a moment) a behavioral interview gives you an excellent opportunity to talk in detail about your experiences and accomplishments. Unfortunately, many interviews still follow the old format the questions may be arbitrary, sometimes based on the content of your resume, sometimes on the preoccupations of the interviewer. They may also be very general in nature. For example, if the XYZ company isnt using behavioral interviewing, they may ask VP candidates a question such as: How much experience do you have working with a small budget? This question doesnt invite the same detailed response as the request for a specific example but who needs an invite? The secret to wowing them at every interview is simply this: act as though your were asked a behavioral question, even when you were not. Imagine two different candidates for this fictional marketing position. When asked How much experience do you have working with a small budget?, Candidate A replies, Ive had to do that a lot actually most of the companies I worked for were small to mid-size, so there was never a lot of opportunity to spend money. Im very good in those situations and I always find a way to make things happen. Candidate B, however, gives a behavioral answer: Ive had to do that a lot actually. Let me give you a recent example… you know the film Dark Night? I created the campaign around that movie with a $10,000 budget. It came to my attention because it was the only film all our staff were excited about, although it was a low-budget, independent production. I decided to create a really cool web site themed around the film, and then we planted seeds of interest on forums and in chat rooms … the whole thing took off within weeks and the movie eventually grossed millions. We never did run a single TV advertisement. By answering in such a concrete and specific way, Candidate B brings himself to life and ensures that he will be much more memorable than his competition. You can use this technique for any question that is vague or general in nature: Q: How much do you know about?…. A: Im very familiar just recently I …. Q: How often have you had to ….? A: Thats something Ive done frequently … actually, I remember when … The technique also works when an interviewer asks a hypothetical question: Q: What would you do if …..? A: Well, I faced a similar situation just last year. What happened was … Preparation is Key To prepare effective stories you must first focus on the employers needs and then develop examples that demonstrate your ability to meet those needs. The employers needs Research the company before you go for the interview identify their key business issues (Are they growing rapidly? Are they in a crowded marketplace? Are they planning new product launches?) Get into the minds of the companys executives and ask yourself: Given their business issues, what will they want to know about me? Developing Your Examples Use the C-A-R (challenge-action-result) formula to develop stories that demonstrate your ability to meet the needs of the employer. If you know from your research that ABC Corporation needs a sales executive who can forge new strategic partnerships, develop stories about your experiences in that area. Describe the initial challenge (e.g. need to enter a new market), the actions you took (researched the market, identified targets, met C-level decision-makers) and the results (built partnerships worth $15 million in revenues within 12 months). If your interviewers have been trained in behavioral interviewing, youll be exceptionally well-prepared. But if not, youll be able to separate yourself from all the other candidates by telling compelling, interesting and targeted stories that demonstrate your ability to add value. Interview Question: Sell Me This Pencil

By Carl Mueller OK, “sell me this pencil” is not a question per se but it is an old school interview question that sales managers used to (and still might) ask potential job candidates. This question might even be asked if you’re not interviewing for a sales job simply to see how you respond to it! It’s an example of a trick interview question or stress interview question that hiring managers often ask interviewees to see how they respond to being thrown off guard. It gives the interviewer a chance to see how the interviewee handles a difficult question that they weren’t expecting and how they think on their feet. For example, does the interviewee: Respond confidently? Look the interviewer in the eye when responding? Give an intelligent and logical response? Give good responses to any questions or concerns the interviewer raises? Try to get the sale and actually sell the pencil? Depending on what the interviewer is looking for, they might simply be looking to see how you answer the question and specifically, what your body language is like during a stressful situation. The point is that sometimes during job interviews, you get asked questions that you weren’t expecting that might seem off base and even silly. Your ability to remain calm and to respond to the question intelligently and in a logical way is generally what the interviewer will be looking for. Need a Lawyer? Four Tips to Finding the Right Lawyer

By Chris Robertson Although none of us ever hopes to be in the position of having to find a lawyer, life circumstances are such that all of us will probably need a lawyer at some point or another. When that time comes, will you know what to look for? If not, here are four tips that will point you in the right direction, whether you live in Indiana, New Mexico, or Georgia. 1. Find an Attorney Before You Need One. That may sound counterintuitive, but the likelihood is great that, when you find that you need an attorney, you won’t be in the best frame of mind to use your good judgment. If you’ve experienced a personal injury as the result of an automobile accident, for example, you may be in too much pain to go through the process of calling attorneys. Likewise, if you’ve been picked up on DUI charges, you need to have the confidence that the lawyer you choose is the right one. How do you find an attorney before you need one? Simply keep your ears open and ask around. If your neighbor had to hire a plumber and was happy with his work, you might ask her for his name and number and keep it handy in case you ever needed a plumber. The same holds true for attorney referrals. If someone you know is going through a legal proceeding and seems happy with his or her lawyer, ask for the lawyer’s name and keep it handy. 2. Choose a Lawyer with Experience in Your Type of Case. Just as you wouldn’t hire a plumber to build you a new set of kitchen cabinets, you shouldn’t retain an estate attorney to build your criminal defense. If you are dealing with drunk driving charges, make sure to select a lawyer who has had experience as a litigator. This could be someone who has worked for the district attorney’s office or who has been a prosecuting attorney, as well as a lawyer who has extensive criminal defense experience. Likewise, if you are facing divorce proceedings and have to deal with issues like custody, child support, or even paternity, look for an attorney who has a family law practice area. Keep in mind, however, that many law firms have several, seemingly disparate practice areas. A law firm can be competent in several practice areas, either because they have associates at the firm who specialize in certain practice areas or because they work cooperatively with other firms who specialize in certain types of cases. 3. Discuss Fees Upfront. Before you engage the services of an attorney, make sure you understand his fee structure. Many law firms charge exorbitant fees simply because they can. Look for a lawyer who charges reasonable fees for his services and for the services of his paralegals. Ideally, start with lawyers who offer a free initial consultation. This will give you the opportunity to assess his abilities and will give him the chance to determine whether or not he can be of assistance. 4. Select an Attorney Who is Available. With many large law firms, you rarely get to speak with your attorney, and are often shuttled to a paralegal or legal secretary. The attorney you hire should be available to you, and you should be able to reach him (or receive a return call) within a reasonable amount of time. If your lawyer is too busy to return your call, you need to ask yourself if he’s too busy to give his full attention to your legal issue. Colon Health – A Healthy Colon Is A Healthy Body

By Adriana Copaceanu Colon health is not a new concept, but it has been growing in popularity as a wonderful alternative health solution to keeping your body healthy. The colon is your body’s waste disposal system. In essence, it’s actually a sewer which is designed to capture and remove toxic materials, bacteria, and general “bad” things from your system. If that system is backed up or slowed down however, then those toxins and bacteria sit around in your body, potentially “leaking” through to other areas, and contaminating you. Colon health enthusiasts believe that the faster you can move that toxic waste out of your body, the less chances you have of leaking the bad stuff back into your system and creating various health problems. The other problem encountered with colons that aren’t in proper health, is the lack of proper nutrition absorption. When your bowels are clogged with waste matter that hasn’t been eliminated properly, that waste can cling to the walls of your colon and bowel. This creates a layer of “sticky” material which doesn’t allow nutrients and vitamins to pass through the colon wall for use by your body. A popular way to keep your colon healthier, is to make sure you keep it cleaned out. Some proponents feel you should do a full colon cleanse at least a couple of times each year, or even with the change of each season. Colon cleansing can be done by flushing the colon fully with an irrigation procedure commonly known as an enema. You can also help your colon flush itself out naturally by drinking extra water, or drinking herbal teas which have a natural laxative effect. Potential colon health problems can manifest in a variety of ways in your body. If for instance, you have internal or external hemorrhoids, this is usually an indication that your colon is backed up with hard, dry waste material. If you do not have at least one good bowel movement each day, this is also an indication you’re colon is not in optimal health. In fact, some proponents of colon therapy feel you should have a minimum of two bowel movements every day. One large movement each morning, and another smaller one later in the day. Your bowels should move immediately and easily as soon as you sit down to eliminate. If you have to wait for the movement, chances are your colon is not as healthy as you might think. Improving the general health of your colon can be done with some fairly simple, easy steps. The first is to drink more water. Hard, dry stools cause constipation and constipation means toxins aren’t being moved out of your body effectively. Drinking plenty of water helps relieve this problem fairly easily. Eating more fiber rich vegetables is another excellent way to improve your colon health. The colon needs the bulk from that fiber to get things moving regularly. Taking laxatives is another option, but it’s not recommended to use over the counter medication style laxatives because these usually have other ingredients in them such as preservatives, coloring and artificial flavoring that might not be good for your body. Instead, try using some herbal teas, or take individual herbs which are known to help improve the health of your colon. Excellent colon health herbs include Chlorophyll, Slippery Elm, and Chickweed. If you’d like to simply give your colon a great cleanse a few times each year, one easy way to do this is to use a seasonal colon cleansing system. Career as a Six Sigma Professional

By Tony Jacowski Job pages in newspapers and on jobsites clear doubts in anyones mind about Six Sigma career opportunities. As companies place emphasis on quality and cost management with process improvement being the underlying foundation, Six Sigma is coming to the forefront because of its overall applicability in a business environment. With it comes an upswing in the demand for Six Sigma professionals. Career Opportunities Career opportunities are on the rise in the Six Sigma sector at various capacities. For experienced professionals, launching their own venture can also be very lucrative. However, job opportunities probably exist within your organization as well as outside of it. Within Your Organization You can enhance your career within your own organization as a black belt or a green belt in Six Sigma discipline by appropriate Six Sigma training. Organizations that decide on Six Sigma implementation usually hire a professional in consultative capacities for initiation. They will not be playing decision-making roles for strategic reasons. Upper management obviously prefers to use its own employees at all levels beginning with green belts at execution levels, black belts at problem solving levels and master black belts at the highest levels. Outside Your Organization A keyword search for Six Sigma in any of the popular job portals reveal the number of available jobs and related information like the level of employment, salary etc. Both freshly trained as well as experienced black belts are in demand; however, the ratio seems to be slightly skewed in favor of those having implemented at least one or two projects. Certain companies place more weight on prior work experience in a relevant field even with freshly trained candidates. Another interesting statistic is that black belts are in a rather higher demand than green belt Six Sigma professionals. This is obvious from the fact that, as green belts form the lower rungs of implementation program, they have the obligation of having to divide their time to their routine work as well. It is normal practice to identify people from within the organization for this position. Six Sigma Training One unfortunate thing about Six Sigma training is that the methodology is not universal and not standardized. Because of this, there is an inconsistency in teaching, subject material etc. It is important for organizations to confirm through references, employment bureaus/counselors and future employers who recognizes which institute.
